23rd Annual VERNAL'S All Night Equinox Dance and Music Weekend
April 3rd thru 5th 2009, O'Leno State Park, Hight Springs, Florida

"Sometimes we'd have that whole river all to ourselves for the longest time. Yonder was the banks and the islands, across the water . . . . . and maybe you could hear a fiddle or a song coming over . . . . . We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened . . . . . "
Mark Twain, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

O'Leno State Park, High Springs, Florida

"Located along the banks of the scenic Santa Fe River, a tributary of the Suwannee River, the park features sinkholes, hardwood hammocks, river swamps, and sandhills. As the river courses through the park, it disappears underground and reemerges over three miles away in the River Rise State Preserve. One of Florida's first state parks, O'Leno was first developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. The suspension bridge built by the CCC still spans the river."

Come early, stay late!  The group camp cabins and common buildings are reserved from Thursday afternoon through Monday morning, so you can extend your stay and enjoy the park at no additional cost. Bring your bike, canoe, fishing pole, a good book...

There are two in-park camping options for the weekend:

1. Group cabins are in the same area as the dance and dining halls. Each sleeps eight in standard-size twin bunk beds; none have climate control or bathrooms. There are centrally located bathhouses for use by cabin campers. Cabins will be designated as single men, single women, co-ed and family. Tent, car and RV camping are not permitted in the group camp.

2. The Magnolia Campground is a brisk 5-minute walk from the group camp. A block of adjacent sites has been reserved for the weekend, 3 p.m. Friday though 1 p.m. Sunday. The park has some pretty strict rules about the numbers of people, tents, cars and campers permitted per site so it will be especially important  for campground campers to set up in the sites assigned.

Watch the weather and plan accordingly:

O'Leno opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset. The gates are locked overnight so please plan comings and goings with this in mind. Someone will let you in on Friday night!

We've even got a couple of bonus days on either side of the weekend; plan to come Thursday and/or stay over Sunday, if you can.

Special non-dancer option:  For spouses, friends, musicians and the like who want to join the party but not the dance--camping, meals and all of the weekend activities except dancing included.

All applications will be accepted on a "first come, first served" basis, striving for gender balance (of  registered dancers) but without guarantees. Filling the weekend takes priority over gender balance.
